What independent testing means
Independent testing means the analytical work that verifies a peptide's identity and purity is performed by a laboratory separate from the manufacturer or supplier. A third-party lab has no financial interest in the batch passing, which removes the conflict of interest that exists when a supplier tests its own material.
For research compounds, independence is what gives a certificate of analysis credibility. Without it, a COA is essentially a self-issued marketing document.
What a credible COA proves
A meaningful third-party COA proves two things: the material in the vial has the molecular identity stated on the label (mass spectrometry), and the sample is predominantly the target compound rather than related impurities (HPLC purity). Some reports also include residual-solvent screening or heavy-metal testing.
The key detail is lot specificity. A generic COA that does not reference a production lot number cannot be tied to any actual vial. Always match the lot number on the COA to the lot number recorded for your order.
Red flags in supplier testing claims
Be cautious of suppliers who show one COA for every product, publish only summary numbers without chromatograms, refuse to identify the testing laboratory, or use vague language like "lab tested" without naming the methods. Another warning sign is a COA dated years before the lot was produced.
A legitimate supplier should be able to tell you which lot your order was fulfilled from and provide the corresponding COA on request. If lot traceability is missing, the testing claim is unverifiable.
